Minerals and metals are invaluable natural resources. Actually, minerals and metals are an undivided part of our lives. We use minerals and metals in many ways. There are number of house hold items, which are made by minerals and metals. Apart from this, minerals and metals are also significantly used for industrial purposes. Before diving deep into the usage of minerals and metals, let’s discuss the basic definition of minerals and metals.
Mineral can be defined as a substance which occurs in natural way. Usually minerals are inorganic and composed specifically. As of now a huge variety of minerals are available and named. Unfamiliar minerals are recognized on the basis of the familiar features and characteristics of specific minerals. Generally, minerals are identified on certain standards like hardness, appearance etc. Amongst thousands of minerals, there are few which are plentiful and can be used for various applications. The common definition of minerals is that minerals are inanimate natural materials which are mined from earth, whereas the scientific definition is more precise.
Metals are considered to be a chemical substance. Generally metals resulted as a blend of two or more metallic substances. Metals have a positive electric charge and posses the qualities of a good conductor. Melting can be easily done on metals. In addition to this metals can be haggard into wires. Furthermore, metals can be shaped easily. Hammering of metals finally result in the form of sheets.
Minerals and metals, both are widely used for various industrial applications. A number of manufacturing depends on theses two materials. Apart from industrial usage, minerals and metals are highly consumed in various general articles which are widely used in daily life. For example, we start the day with by cleaning our teeth with toothpaste, and toothpaste contains minerals. In kitchen we use steel utensils, which is a metal. Our ornaments are also made by precious metals like gold and silver. These are just very few example but we hugely use these minerals and metals in many other ways in our daily routine life.
The most commonly used minerals and metals are Aluminum, iron, lead, magnesium and magnesium alloys, magnetic materials, mercury, beryllium, brass, bronze, cobalt, copper, gold, indium, silver etc. Furthermore, metals and minerals are found in powder form as well. Titanium & titanium alloys, zinc mica, nickel & nickel alloys, non ferrous alloys, platinum are few other frequently seen and used minerals and metals.
